7.2 Competence
Relevant Definitions:
Competence: | ability to apply knowledge and skills to achieve intended results |
The team members making purchasing, logistical and planning decisions must have the skills and knowledge to make the most sustainable decision for the organisation and event, based on the policies and directives set down by the organisation.
With the right knowledge they will be able to successfully scrutinise the supply chain and proposals, ask the right questions and guide the event to the most sustainable outcome. If the team does not have these skills, staff training, ongoing professional development or contracting an external consultant are options.
If the competence isn’t in place, then the clause asks for the organisation to take action to get that competence into the team. This could be training to relevant event staff or the engagement of a consultant to lead the team forward.
If you have a sustainability manager or co-ordinator on staff, conduct quarterly information sessions and in-house workshops with the rest of the team to complement any formal training.
It’s advised to encourage relevant persons to join the Sustainable Event Alliance and to become SEA Accredited Professionals. Additionally those staff engaged with sustainability planning should network with peers through LinkedIn Events Sustainability Practitioners, so those leading the charge in event sustainability can keep up to date with the latest solutions and initiatives.
If you have a sustainability manager or co-ordinator on staff, conduct quarterly information sessions and in-house workshops to complement formal training.
