Zero Waste

The Zero Waste movement has an overall vision for the future where we are working within closed loops, producing no waste at all.

The idea is to see any waste as a residual product or potential resource and to develop systems to optimize this.

Using salvaged and reclaimed materials; storing and re-using materials and equipment; sending gear for salvage; and re-purposing are all ways to reduce waste. Hiring in site infrastructure, production, décor and other gear will reduce waste created on the build for the event. Controlling what waste is created by traders, sponsors and NGOs and the audience is also part of the picture.

The goal is to design in-waste prevention through processing techniques, component design, materials choice, minimising packaging, eliminating hazardous processes/  materials, and forward planning uses for residual products.

  • Envisage the end life of everything you purchase to produce the event and all the products you sell there.
  • Where could the waste end up, and how can you ensure it is sent back into the system as recyclable material, compost or re-purposed/re-used?
  • Look for a Zero Waste initiative in the local region and invite them to be part of the festival.
