6. Identifying Issues

This subject looks the types of issues to be addressed and opportunities to be enhanced within the context of sustainable event management.

When identifying the sustainability issues and opportunities, we are looking at the impacts and legacies an event can have on the community and on the environment.

These can be both positive and negative.

Invariably, the key operational areas under which issues and opportunities will fall can be summarised as:

  • Procurement
  • Waste
  • Energy
  • Transport
  • Water & Sanitation
  • Venue/Accommodation
  • Communications

Apart from the above, impacts and legacy opportunities for the following should be considered:

  • Workforce
  • Local biodiversity
  • Natural environment
  • Local community
The level of  relevance and the degree of significance is also necessary to ensure that issues are dealt with appropriate importance.
