1. Sustainable Development

This subject investigates the concepts around sustainable development and how it relates to event production.

In 1987, the World Commission on Environment and Development created a definition of sustainable development in their report ‘Our Common Future’;

‘Sustainable development meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.’

Concern for sustainable development cuts across three areas:

  • Social
  • Environmental
  • Economic

or

  • People
  • Planet
  • Profit

Corporate Social Responsibility
Increasingly, businesses are operating with consideration for what is known as the Triple Bottom Line. Rather than just economic or financial focus, ‘the bottom line’ the business considers, addresses and reports on the three sustainability tenants: Economic, Social, Environmental.

Sustainable development principles
The organization’s governing sustainable development principles should reflect stewardship, inclusivity, integrity and transparency.
